Friends of the MCBC
The Friends of MCBC was founded in November
1992 by Peter Fullerton (C.1949), one of MCBCs most distinguished oarsmen. At
the time MCBCs fleet consisted almost entirely of wooden shells, which were
beginning to prove a handicap to its oarsmen and women, as other colleges on
river re-equipped with glass fibre and carbon fibre shells. In nine years 193
donors, most notably John Clay and Tony Marchington, gave nearly £100,000
gross, which completely replenished the fleet.
The fund closed in 2001, and in February 2004
the balance of £22,663 purchased a new Empacher VIII, William of
Waynflete, in which the Men's 1st VIII went Head of the River in
2004. The small residual balance was transferred to the MCBC Endowment Fund.
The MCBC Endowment Fund was launched in January
2000 by Paul Beckwith (C.1979) and picked up in March 2000 by Eric Redman (RS.1970).
Tony Wickson specified a third of his legacy, which brought the fund to nearly
£200,000 by October 2003.

In February 2004 the Friends of MCBC was relaunched
with the aim of raising the endowment to £500,000 by 2009, MCBC's
150th Anniversary. The annual income from the endowment will then cover all
MCBC's equipment, racking and coaching costs at current levels and give
MCBC the financial independence it has so long sought. These costs are currently
being met by Zvi Meitar, a friend of the College, who has pledged £20,000
a year until 2009. This extraordinarily generous gift has been made on the understanding
that all is done to complete the endowment in the meantime. This is achievable
if former rowers commit to five years of support now.
Currently 195 donors have contributed around £400,000.
